Registeraion opens on February 15 for two photo tours in the Calabria region of Italy.
Calabria is in the southern most part of Italy, "the toe of the boot."
I first traveled to this region in 2018 and I immediately fell in love with the landscapes, medieval villages, olive groves, vinyards, seascapes, and, of course, the food and wine!
And I have come to appreciate the people in this predominently agricultural part of Italy. The pace is slower, people take pride in their work whatever that may be, and there is a deep appreciation for food and its importance in terms of family and community.
My friend, Guerino, who was born and raised near the medieval mountain village of Badolato, says something to the effect, "To know a people, you must know how they eat!"
In Calabria, everyone in the food chain takes pride in their role, from the organic farmer to the processors of virgin olive oil, to those who prepare and present meals, and ultimately to the sharing of that meal with others. Meal time in Italy is a social experience to be savored and enjoyed with family and friends.
It's this emphasis on what's important in life that permiates every aspect of the culture that I find so appealing about traveling in this part of the world.
And it all has an old world feel to it, a timeless quality. Walking the streets of medieval villages that have been traversed by countless others for centuries, or photographing the caves where ascetic monks lived in the mountaions around Stilo, tends to add perspective to one's life.
I look forward to returning to Calabria in September of this year to lead two small groups, one on the western coast of the peninsula and one on the eastern coast.
On the west is Sicily, separated by the Strait of Messina which opens into the Tyrrhenian Sea.

On the east is the Ionian Sea which Italy share with Albania and Greece. The influences of these countries is evident in the architecture and of course, the food!

We take only eight (8) photographers on these trips, which is a number that makes travel a little easier yet still provides ample opportunity for forming friendships and sharing photo knowledge.
Accompanying us on both of these trips is my Italian friend, Isabella Voce, who has been my guide since my first trip to the region in 2018. She speaks fluent Italian and English and is a pleasure to travel with!
If you have any questions about either of these tours, email me here!
Best,
