Meet the People We're Supporting

The purpose of this effort is very simple: to find practical ways to help people I know in Cuba as they cope with increasingly difficult circumstances.

What began with helping my friend Vivian and her immediate family has gradually expanded. When groceries, medicine, household supplies, phone recharges, or other assistance reach them, the benefit often extends beyond one household. Vivian shares what she can with members of her extended family, neighbors, and others around her who are also struggling.

I’ve created a gallery that provides a glimpse into the people behind this effort and what some of that help looks like after it arrives.

A few of the photographs are mine, made during previous visits to Cuba. Most, however, are simple snapshots Vivian has sent me in recent weeks — photographs of her family, deliveries arriving at their home, supplies they have received, and some of the people with whom those supplies have been shared.

They aren’t intended to be polished photographs or a complete account of everything that is happening. They are simply a window into the reality behind these pages.

When you recharge a phone, send groceries, contribute toward medicine or household necessities, or help with a larger project such as solar power, there are real people on the other end of that help.

I’ll continue adding photographs to the gallery as Vivian sends them and as this effort continues.
