We’re getting close to Apple’s annual iPhone announcement, which means the rumor mill is running at full speed.

As always, none of this is certain until Apple actually announces the new phones and they are in users’ hands. Some rumors prove remarkably accurate, others not so much.

But as we get closer, a few reports are being repeated often enough and coming from enough different sources that they’re worth paying attention to.

For photographers, there are two areas that are particularly interesting:

  1. the cameras and
  2. the physical design of the phone.

And the second one may turn out to be more important than it sounds.

Don't Expect Another Lens Choice

First, there are currently no credible reports suggesting that Apple plans to add another focal-length choice to the camera system.

The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max currently give us the familiar:

0.5x • 1x • 2x • 4x • 8x

There are still three physical rear cameras. The 2x view comes from the high-resolution Main camera, while 8x is an optical-quality crop from the 4x Telephoto camera. Apple lists the current Main camera at 24mm, the 2x option at 48mm, the Telephoto at 100mm (4x), and the 8x option at 200mm equivalent. (apple.com)

At this point, there is no convincing evidence of a new 3x, 5x, 10x or fourth physical rear camera being added to the iPhone 18 Pro models.

So, if the reports are right, 0.5x through 8x may look very familiar.

What happens inside some of those cameras, however, could be more interesting.

Variable Aperture May Be the Big Camera Story

The camera rumor that continues to gain credibility is a variable aperture on the Main camera.

Beginning with the iPhone 14 Pro and continuing through the 17 Pro, Apple’s Main camera has used a fixed ƒ/1.78 aperture. That opening doesn’t physically change.

A variable-aperture camera could change that.

Instead of the lens always operating at one aperture, the camera could physically change the size of the opening through which light reaches the sensor. That could give the iPhone more control in bright and low-light situations and potentially provide some additional control over depth of field.

Reports of this feature have circulated for quite some time, but they’ve become more convincing recently. Leaked supplier information reportedly identifies a new Sony sensor for the iPhone 18 Pro Max with support for variable aperture. (macrumors.com)

The question now is which phone gets it.

For months, reports suggested that both the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max would receive variable aperture. A very recent report says Apple may reserve it for the 18 Pro Max. The supplier information specifically confirms the Pro Max but doesn’t settle the question about the smaller Pro. (macrumors.com)

At this point, variable aperture on the iPhone 18 Pro Max looks increasingly likely. Whether it will also be available on the 18 Pro is less certain.

How Apple implements it will also be important. Having a variable aperture doesn’t necessarily mean Apple will give photographers a traditional camera-style aperture control where they simply select ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8, ƒ/4 and so forth. Some or all of the operation could be automatic.

Until Apple shows us, we simply don’t know.

There’s another reason this distinction is worth watching. In recent generations, buyers have generally been able to choose between the Pro and Pro Max based primarily on the physical size they preferred without giving up important camera capabilities. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max shared the same camera system, as do the current iPhone 17 Pro models. Apple has not always done it that way. Most recently, the iPhone 15 Pro had a 3x Telephoto while the 15 Pro Max alone received the new 5x Telephoto.

If variable aperture is reserved for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, photographers may once again have to consider more than phone size when choosing between the Pro and Pro Max. Someone who prefers the smaller Pro could potentially have to give up a significant camera feature to get it.

There are also reports that the Telephoto camera may receive a larger aperture, which would allow more light to reach the sensor and could improve performance in lower light. (macrumors.com)

The Physical Size May Be the Sleeper Story

Here’s something that won’t get as many headlines as variable aperture, but it matters quite a bit to photographers who use accessories.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to retain a 6.9-inch display, the same advertised display size as the current 17 Pro Max. (macrumors.com)

That might lead to the assumption that the phones will be physically identical.

That should not be assumed.

Apple lists the current iPhone 17 Pro Max at:

163.4 mm high
78.0 mm wide
8.75 mm deep

Dummy models reportedly based on information supplied to accessory manufacturers suggest that the 18 Pro Max could be only about 0.36 mm taller and 0.39 mm wider than the 17 Pro Max. That’s almost nothing when holding the phone in the hand. (macrumors.com)

But it can be a very big deal when trying to fit something precisely around it.

Even more interesting is the camera area.

One set of measurements from leaked dummy units puts the thickness through the camera plateau at approximately 11.54 mm on the 18 Pro Max versus 11.23 mm on the 17 Pro Max.

Measured all the way through the protruding camera lenses, the difference becomes greater:

18 Pro Max: approximately 13.77 mm
17 Pro Max: approximately 12.92 mm

That’s nearly a millimeter more camera protrusion.

Again, that may never be noticed when simply holding the phone.

Accessories certainly might notice it.

Why This Matters for Infrared and Other Accessories

Accessories needed for infrared photography must fit very precisely around the iPhone’s camera area so that a filter can be positioned correctly over the lens.

A slight change in the height of the camera plateau, the amount the lenses protrude, or the dimensions of the phone can mean that an accessory made for one generation no longer fits the next.

The same issue can affect cases, filter mounts, lens adapters, cages and some tripod or mounting systems.

That’s why a statement such as “the 18 Pro Max will remain essentially the same size” doesn’t tell us everything we need to know.

Essentially the same may be close enough for a pocket.

It may not be close enough for a precision filter mount.

There was an intriguing development on August 19. OtterBox cases appeared at Best Buy with packaging indicating that at least some iPhone 17 Pro cases will also fit the iPhone 18 Pro. That’s a pretty strong indication that the smaller Pro may remain extremely close to the current model physically. (macrumors.com)

But notice the important word there:

Pro.

There has not yet been equivalent confirmation for the Pro Max, and the Pro Max is the model associated with several reports of a larger camera assembly and slightly different dimensions. (macrumors.com)

So anyone planning to buy an 18 Pro Max who already owns expensive cases or photography accessories made specifically for the 17 Pro Max should not count on them fitting yet.

They may.

But it would be wise to wait for confirmation before purchasing anything based on that assumption.

When Will We Know for Sure?

We shouldn’t have to wait much longer.

As of this writing, Apple has not officially announced the date of its annual September iPhone event. However, current reporting points to Wednesday, September 9, 2026 as the most likely date.

If Apple follows its usual pattern, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max could go on sale Friday, September 18. Preorders would normally begin about a week earlier, although there is some uncertainty about the preorder schedule this year because September 11 falls on a Friday.

One possibility being discussed is that Apple could open preorders on Saturday, September 12 instead.

There is also a possibility that Apple holds the event a little later in September, which could push the phones’ release to Friday, September 25.

So, for now, these dates belong on the calendar in pencil:

Anticipated Apple Event: September 9
Possible Preorders: September 11 or 12
Most Likely On-Sale Date: September 18

None of those dates is official yet.

Once Apple makes its announcement, the rumors and predictions can finally be replaced with actual specifications — including the camera changes and, importantly for those who use cases, filters and other accessories, the exact physical dimensions of the new phones.

Where Things Stand Right Now

The basic 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 4x and 8x arrangement appears likely to remain familiar, with no strong indication of another focal length being added.

The Main camera may gain a variable aperture, with the strongest evidence currently pointing to the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The Telephoto camera may get a larger aperture, potentially improving low-light performance.

And while the new phones may look very similar to the iPhone 17 Pro models, the Pro Max camera assembly may be physically thicker, which raises real questions about compatibility with existing cases and photographic accessories.

As always, these are rumors — some stronger than others.

We’ll know soon enough.

When the new phones are actually available, two questions will matter most to photographers: what Apple has really done with the cameras, and which existing accessories will still fit.
